Porsche started developing a turbocharged version of the 911 in the late 1960s to meet racing homologation requirements. Initially, the car was intended as a street-legal race vehicle. However, FIA regulations changed, necessitating production cars for Group 4 and 5 races. Consequently, Porsche produced 400 units of the 911 Turbo by the end of 1975 to comply with Group 4 rules and developed the 935 for Group 5. The 911 Turbo, intended for the 1976 racing season, became popular among enthusiasts, leading to the production of the 1,000th unit by May 1976.
